Carol:
I think we're stuck with Gambon for Dumbledore. And since DD is less
genial and twinkly in HBP (and "The Prince's Tale" in DH) than in the
earlier books, he may be better in those films than in PoA and GoF. I
just hope someone persuades him to read DH, or at least "The Prince's
Tale," so he knows how to play "Severus, please!" (*He* has to know
that DD wants snape to kill him, but filmgoers who haven't read the
books should be fooled. That scene has to be done perfectly. Rickman
will get it right, but Gambon needs to get it right, to. Oh, I'm all
of a flutter! as Molly [is it Molly?] would say.)
As for Anthony Hopkins as Slughorn, he's not nearly fat enough for the
role, and I don't think of him as playing genial characters, however
self-serving. (Butlers and coolly psychotic murderers, actually. He
could have done Voldemort brilliantly.) Hopkins as Marvolo Gaunt,
however! I think he could get the accent and the expressions and the
sinister creepiness of that character down pat.
Patrick Stewart for Scrimgeour, maybe? He's got to be in there
somewhere as the HP films are a Who's Who of British acting greats.
Carol, now wondering who's sinister enough for Fenrir Greyback and
pathetic enough for poor Merope
