Thanks for the December Boys review! It's only on 16 screens nationwide
this week. Go to _www.decemberboys.com_ (http://www.decemberboys.com) for a
list of where and when it opens. I'll have to drive 100 miles to Cincinnati to
see it unless it opens wider by Oct. 19.
It was interesting to read some of the reviews after seeing and reading so
many of the video and print interviews for the film. I was kind of annoyed to
read a review that made rude comments about his "hairy legs" - do reviewers
say anything about Robin Williams' hairy ANYTHING (and Williams is massively
hairy!!)? NO! But poor Dan, yikes, they won't give him a break. The
combination of pale skin (so pale he's "blue" according to Dan in one TV interview
- on Rove, that was it - a VERY funny interview, look for it on YouTube)
with dark hair is going to make his legs look different, especially since he's
still young and skinny, but to pick on that kind of thing to comment on in a
review???? Yikes, that's annoying!
As for interesting interviews/reviews, Rove was by far one of the funniest.
In quite a few interviews, Dan was asked "why this film? Why Australia?"
He said this was the best script that came his way that would fit into his
schedule, and he would go anywhere for a good script. He also said a director
he met with but hasn't worked with told him the next thing he did after Potter
should be an ensemble piece where the burden wasn't on his shoulders, so
"December Boys," which is really Misty's story, was perfect for that. So yeah,
I think he does have a bit of a career plan - he's said over and over that he
won't take a role just to work. It has to be challenging, interesting and
different or he won't want to do it. He wants a career like Gary Oldman's and
Christian Bales's, with big movies and independent films and stage roles.
That kind of "career plan" should give him a long and successful career, much
more so than if all he wanted to do was blockbusters. Yikes, one flopped
blockbuster at the box office can do serious damage to some people's careers.
If December Boys is a moderate success, I think he'll be well pleased. I just
hope it's enough of a success to open wider so I don't have to drive 100
miles to see it!!
