Carol responds:
Have you forgotten the old Dark Wizard Grindelwald, taunting Voldemort
in his prison cell before Voldemort, that ignorant johnny-come-in his
who doesn't even know about the Deathly Hallows, AKs him? Maybe Ian
McKellen or Christopher Lee could play him, or is that too LOTRish?
Also, the role requires a kind of charm or charisma, which GG retains
(IMO) despite his great age and deplorable living conditions. Maybe
Derek Jacobi, whose work I'm not all that familiar with, could pull
that off at least as well as the other two?
And now me:
Christopher Lee is always Christopher Lee, no matter what role he is playing. King Haggard, Saruman, that Magisterium guy who only has one line in The Golden Compass.... Even the villain that he played in Star Wars Episode 2. He always comes across as roughly the same character. In the Golden Compass in 15 minutes, in fact, in the scene where Christopher Lee appears his acting is described simply -
Christopher Lee: *Christopher Lees*
Now, don't get me wrong, I LIKE Christopher Lee, I think he's wonderful, and I think he has been sadly typecast in recent years, but I just don't see him as Grindelwald.
What about Bill Nighy? Has anybody suggested him?...
