Geoff:
As I've commented before, sweaters/jumpers and pudding/afters/dessert 
are used interchangeably in everyday UK English. I took a while to work out 
what sneakers were.

I'm not sure that they are considered inedible. i think it is that they are so 
rarely seen in the shops that people really don't know what to do with them. 
They only seem to appear around Hallowe'en time.
