I think that it is much more likely that the reference to Gladiator (or better yet, Sparticus I think) comes from the moments when the Quidditch team waited in a wood lined hallway, behind a wooden door.  Apparently, in these other films, the gladiators waited in a similar space before bing released inito the arena.
