Message-ID: <99rg7h+l2rg@...> Hi, HP4GU New Yorkers... I *hate* to do this, but I can't see any way around it. Instead of spending my Spring Break in New York, I'm going to be in Chicago. Family reasons--my uncle's job transferred him there from California four weeks ago, and he's been living out of a suitcase. It's a mess... wife and 2 small kids now have to move cross-country while my uncle works 50-60 hour weeks. (And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why I am a teacher and not a techie like him. ;-)) I know this may sound weird to anyone who is not in a family like mine, but to say that we're close-knit is an understatement. We're all caravaning to Chicago to help 'em out Easter weekend. To make things worse, I *will* be meeting two HP people who'll be in the Chicago area. Pippin and Jana will be meeting up with me whenever I get there to help 'em unpack. But there's a silver lining to every cloud... As you may know, I'm going to be in England from July 1-August 11. I talked to my sister today since we had to change our travel plans... and now, it looks like we'll be spending my birthday weekend in NY. I know, I know... that's not until August, and I was looking forward to meeting you guys in 2-3 weeks as well, but... Also, it looks like I may be spending at least a day in New York coming and going, so if anyone's around the first of July, that would be good too. In closing, I'm sorry I can't make it... and as Jim told me about the fun everyone had on the 22nd, I do hope you still get the chance to meet. Don't be too mad at me, please! And I look eagerly forward to seeing you this summer... I am sitting here *crying* because I want to be a part of it, New York, New York! Right now... Best, Ebony From john at ... Sinead, Penn Sta is god awful. I know this, cause as a LIer, that's our only choice. We have no trains from Grand Central, which is too bad cause it's lovely. Still trying to figure out if i can come or not, but if I do I'd be glad to meet you, you'd just have to let me know what time. If I am remembering right, by the main entrance is this oval-shaped hall with the leader board announcing departures and arrivals and stuff. That's probably the best place to meet people, as all hallways in Penn seem to lead to it. If you want to get to GC, follow the signs to the subway (13579 -- it'll be the line with the numbers in the red circles). this, incidentially, will take you right through the Long Island Railroad portion of the station. Beware the commuters. They're a growly bunch, especially before the coffee kicks in . Take that train ($1.50, there are metrocard machines) up to times square and from there catch the shuttle to GC (free transfer)...it's an "S" in a grey circle. This is about all my brain will let me remember at the moment. I'm excited about this, and i really do hope i can make it -- can john or whoever is organizing this shindig let me know if we have anything definate yet? thankee -- Abbie, who is living proof that you can take the girl out of NY, but you can't take the NY out of the girl... starling823 at ... 69% obsessed with HP and loving it "Ah, music," Dumbledore said, wiping his eyes. Alternatively, if it is nice and the ground isn't too soggy, we could stop by a supermarket for picnic supplies and sit out on the Sheep Meadow or on Strawberry Fields. I hesitate to select a picnic -- it is April, after all, and the weather isn't certain -- but it would be great if it's warm enough/dry enough/not too windy. I agree that if we end up in a coffee shop we need a quieter place. We also need to bring a wheelbarrow or a large perambulator for Sinead if she again shows up in a sleep-deprived state. :) For those of you who weren't there the first time, the dim sum was great and highly recommended. I liked the Italian restaurant we had dinner in but I'd like to try something different next time, maybe the Ethiopian restaurant across the street. When we all met previously, we did a dim-sum pigout in Chinatown at Jim Fong, which John Walton rightly calls the best dim-sum palace in the city (It's on Elizabeth Street near Canal). We went to the Village, speaking of your old haunt, and hung out at a coffee bar and then had dinner at a good Italian restaurant, both on McDougall Street. Sorry, I don't remember the names -- anyone help out? The second time we met we went to FAO Schwarz on Fifth and saw the full range of Harry Potter merchandise, which we didn't much like (Highlights: A Scabbers plush toy and Troll Booger Potion). Dinner was good, though, if you are a carnivore: The Green Field at 108th and Northern in Corona, on the way out to Shea Stadium. It's a Brazilan barbecue: You get salad and some delicious side dishes at a buffet style arrangement. When you're done with that, you take the little wooden bobbin on your table and turn it green side up. Waiters start coming to your table with a wide variety of meats on sword-like skewers: steaks, sausages, lamb, rabbit, turkey, up to fifteen different items, and they keep bringing it until you give up and turn your bobbin red side up or explode, whichever comes first. THEN they bring an obscene dessert trolley. We had a great time. Maybe you'd be interested in getting together with whoever of us is around at the time. Have a great time! Amen to that! I was stunned at the prices. One worthwhile movie experience is in the American Museum of Natural History -- fantastic IMAX theater. There's also the Rose Center for Space (possibly not the right name, but it's the Rose Center something-or-other) attached to the Natural History Museum. > When we all met previously, we did a dim-sum pigout in > Chinatown at Jim Fong, which John Walton rightly calls > the best dim-sum palace in the city (It's on Elizabeth > Street near Canal). It is the only remaining Cinerama theatre in the U.S. (A huge, curved screen -- 2001 A Space Odyssey had its big opening there, many years ago.) Even the most mediocre of movies is exciting on a Cinerama screen. I saw all the rereleased Star Wars movies there and it was incredible. (Even Phantom Menace was pretty good there.) The HP movie will probably open there -- anyone want to make a pilgrimage? > When we all met previously, we did a dim-sum pigout in > Chinatown at Jim Fong, which John Walton rightly calls > the best dim-sum palace in the city (It's on Elizabeth > Street near Canal). I have also forgotten the name of the Italian restaurant, but it was on MacDougall, a little north of Bleeker St. There is a Green Fields in DC, also, as well as a zillion other great restaurants, if anyone does decide to visit. --Joywitch From jferer at ... It's a fun town. I grew up in Alexandria. I took allowance money to ride in on the AB&W bus (pre-Metro). I have the fondest memories of the Uptown. I saw the original Star Wars on the *first day* of release in 1977 at the Uptown. It is truly a great movie house. (I believe I saw Ghandi for the first time there also) There are many fun restaurants, but my memories are out-of-date compared with Joywitch's, I'm sure. Millie and Al's in Adams-Morgan (great jukebox, and you get your drinks in miniatures), the Red Sea (Ethiopian, great)and Germaine's (journalist hangout, you can eavesdrop shamelessly), and the Smithsonian museums are wonderful. Not a bad idea at all. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Mail http://personal.mail.yahoo.com/ From LHunneb at ... In fact, I just emailed you, John, but now you can ignore it because I put this list on my "Favorites" list. It will be easy for me to access it now. If I'm invited, I may bring her along (if that's okay). Am I invited too? I'm very nice. Things to do/Timing 1) Meeting Up: I recommend 10:30 am on Saturday, at the Information Booth Clock, which is in the center of the Main Concourse at Grand Central Terminal (42nd-48th St between Madison & Lex, Subway 4, 5, 6, 7, S). The Main Concourse (not the waiting room!) is the enormous hall with the ceiling of stars (Great Hall...). I will hopefully (assuming the iron-on transfer works) be wearing my "Nobody Knows I'm A Wizard" blue t-shirt; alternatively, I'll email the group Friday night with what I'll be wearing. Jim and I do tend to stand out in a crowd (being taller and, well, bigger than everyone else :) so there should be no problem meeting up. If you're unavoidably delayed, don't panic -- folks will probably be starting to post cellphone numbers soon -- write them down and call us -- we'll tell you where we are :) 2) Dim sum @ Jing Fong: The best dim sum palace in NYC. It's on Elizabeth, the block immediately south of Canal, opposite the police precinct. Nearest subway is the 6. It's excellent and really moderately priced for the quality. If you have a special dietary requirement, yell now :) We'll probably head there directly from Grand Central. 3) The afternoon: Since it's supposed to be nice (and if it turns out to be) I will bring a picnic blanket with me and we can go find a good spot in Central Park if nothing else. Alternatively, we can always go sit in a cafe somewhere (the Village, perhaps?). 4) The evening: Dinner someplace? I'll check out this week's Time Out to see if anything catches my eye; if not, we'll find somewhere like we did last time! 5) I can't think of anything else :) But if anyone has any recommendations, feel free to yell! --John (cellphone number to follow!) This is Abbie, who has been mostly lurking over the summer bemoaning poor net connections, but is 99.9% positive she's going to be in the city on Saturday. Would anyone like to get together? No brilliant suggestions other than playing tourist , and maybe stopping in FAO Schwarz to play with all the HP stuff they have in there (some very nice plush toys), and wander, and eat, and compare levels of obsessiveness. The last couple of times everyone got together I either was away at college or working and couldn't make it, so I hope a few people are free and want to hang out for a while. Sidebar -- I work at sears, and they're doing a poster giveaway -- the official movie ones!!! go to the children's department of your local sears and get a free poster with the purchase of any HP merchandise. they're also doing a contest -- grand prize is trip for four to London for the premier! ::pouts -- employees are inelegible:: so -- john, jenny, cassie, anyone else out there who's a NYer -- or all you fellow lurkers, i know there's more than just me! No offense, Heidi, but this strikes me as unnecessarily bureaucratic. Wouldnt it be easier for everyone who is coming to just email Jenny, as she suggested? Not everyone is on webview; and not everyone who is coming responded to the last poll. Of course, it is up to Jenny, since she volunteered to be the reservations-elf. --Joywitch From LHunneb at ... In an interview with the website ShowBiz Ireland, the Irish actor accused many of the actors attending Sunday night's premiere of the Harry Potter film as "spoiled." "They'd go to the opening of an envelope," he said. "Anything for exposure," he added, then continued "What I hate about our business today is the elitism. So-called stars ride in private jets and have bodyguards and dietitians and beauticians. Tom Cruise is a midget and he has eight bodyguards all 6 feet 10, which makes him even more diminutive. It's an absolute joke." He suggested that the only reason Madonna didn't attend the movie was that she would not be able to understand it. =========== BTW, I work for a non-profit charity that has added some one-of a kind POTTER items to our fundraising auction.
