Actually outlining the eyes in kohl is very ancient. It was thought to
enhance ones vision and protect the eyes from the glare of the sun. It
almost the rule in the ancient Neart East. It was also done by both
men and women in India because it was considered very sexually
attractive-- if you wnated to flirt with someone it was good to make
your eyes very noticable!!
