I read a theory, eons ago, far too long ago for me to remember where,
that it was postulated that the custom originated when people wanted to
paint their eyes to resemble their cats. The little wildcat that people
think was domesticated into Felis domesticus has such lines, and the
cheetah, which definitely was kept for sport in Egypt, has pronounced
outlining around its eyes.
