In the US, we call this "musty"

Oh dear...why did I start this? <g> I meant to say "fug"!  The whole point
of explaining it here was that it seemed that Doreen was either puzzled by
it or thought it was a typo:

To me it was the aftermath of the "puff of green smoke" - a warm, smoky,
noxious, stifling cloud (like tobacco smoke in a pub?).  It was a word in my
memory that presented itself to me as the right one for the occasion.  I
must have picked up that usage from somewhere! Dickens, perhaps?
