I think it will all be explained fully in the upcoming 
Rowling/Pratchett cooperative work,  "Harry Potter and the Dried Frog 
Pills."  In it they lock LV up with the Bursar, and in twenty minutes 
all they find is a note saying "I aten't dead-- but I wish I was!"
