It does smack of elitism to limit membership, as someone else (sorry, 
forgot who) said.  

Aren't there list elves to help with guiding new members through 
the 'growing pangs' of newbie-ship?  Are there enough of them?  I'd 
most certainly be willing to help out.  (I'm here, just waiting to be 
used!)
