Neil, go to the movie...
I think that the FOTR may be the exception to my rule...
I find that if you read the book first, you can still enjoy the
movie, but if you see the film first, the book is not as good...
I think you could see the film and have your appetite whetted for the
books. I came back and reread the Two Towers, and probably will start
a reread of Return of the King soon.
Tolkien is absolutely amazing. There is no need to make comparisons
between HP and Tolkien..why fight about it..we can all happily enjoy
all the books and all the films!
