I think its important to remember when LOTR was written. At the time, it was regarded as a fantastic, new type of fiction...it was quirky for its day. Of course, years later, audiences have become more experienced with the Fantasy genre, and the genre itself has developed way beyond what it was when Tolkien was writing.
