I actually have a book about The Snake. It does list all the years 
from 1900 to 2007. Each year is not only represented by one of the 12 
animals but by 5 elements(Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, & Earth). So in 
your case 1970 was the year of the Dog and the element would be 
metal. There are numerous sites on the web that include the element 
as well.
