A pretty good novel about these types of conspiracy
theories is Foucault's Pendulum, by Umberto Eco
(author of The Name of the Rose).

One caveat: evidently, neither Eco nor any of his
editors--in Italy or any other country where
translations have been sold--is capable of correctly
adding 666 to 1344, thus getting 2010, not 2000 as in
the book. If you can overlook the bad math, it's kind
of a fun read...teaches you not take these things too
seriously.
