Yes, it was called Masquerade and it was a beautiful and, to my mind, 
faintly creepy book.  I forget the author but he was a jeweler and 
artist more than a writer; I'll never forget the illustration that was 
done all in inlaid wood.  The whole book was a work of art.  My friend 
and I tried to work out the clues but we never got anywhere.  

The person who found the treasure had read the book but hadn't really 
worked out the clue entirely, IIRC.  The author was disappointed.

I think he did a second one, didn't he?
