You lucky thing. We had to take it every year.
A parallel from my own high school experience would be swimming. Our
h.s. had a pool, and everyone needed to take at least one quarter of
swimming. I believe that the general idea was that no one should
graduate from high school without this very basic life skill--good
idea if you ask me (and one of the few instances where the curriculum
seemed to be designed by someone who looked at life, looked at
school, and tried to make school a decent preparation for life--I got
a very good high school education, but it was mostly in spite of the
official structures, not because of them).
I can't recall whether flying was optional. My impression was that
it was required--it just didn't take place during the usual classroom
hours.
