My mother-in-law, a Texas native(!) came out here to California and 
told me she wanted to visit some friends of hers in "La JALL -a" which 
is spelled La Jolla and pronounced /La HOY-a/
I think I've already mentioned my confusion over /San WAH-keen/ and San 
Joaquin. For a couple of years I had no idea they were the same place.
