I love The Mists of Avalon as well. Definitely one of those "classic"
fantasy books. I've never been too terribly fond of MZB's writing style
(a bit dry at times) but didn't care when reading this, the story was
that good.
Mists of Avalon is one of my favorites too, and was my introduction into the legend of Arthur. It's definitely not for kids though. I'm right now reading Stewart's Merlin trilogy, but my absolute favorite Arthurian novels are the five written by Stephen Lawhead that span from Merlin's parents to king Arthur's death.
I don't know of any books for kids except for TH White's Sword in the Stone books, and I did not like those at all, though a kid might. Another good series that is somewhat related to Arthurian legend is Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising series. That is written at about a middle school level.
