I started ninth grade when I was 13 and left it at 14, as did several of
my friends who were born in September, October, NOvember, and December. It
depends on the school system and what month the cutoff is
for entering kintergarten, which apparently varies from state to state and
town to town.

Excluding students who skip grades and those who repeat them, I think it
is safe to safe most 9th graders are 14 at some point during that year.

When I entered kintergarten, most of my peers were all born in the same
calendar year. So, everyone was  5 by the end of December.
