I really enjoyed these two books (UK first book: Northern Lights) and
found them very gripping. So I'd say, if the first one didn't really
grab you, don't force yourself for the sake of it. Leave them, and
if in a year or ten, it bugs you, come back to them. You'll enjoy
them more for their own sake, instead of people's recommendations.
