Yet another take on the HDM series:
I've read the series three times, with enjoyment. However, Pullman's
preaching gives me stomach cramps. Perhaps that's simply because I'm a
Christian - a religion he doesn't seem to like very well. But I seem to
spend a lot of my reading time feeling attacked for values I (at least)
don't hold - and see those values replaced with a set of purportedly
anti-Christian values I *do* hold. All in all, a strange feeling.
Perhaps this is how people who dislike Christianity experience the Narnia
stories ... Of course, I'd like to think that I'd be equally PO'd with a
Christian author if he (or she) were as heavy handed with other religions as
Pullman is with mine. And since I do love the Narnia tales deeply, I'd like
to think that CSL shows more charity with his enemies than Pullman. But I'm
not sure I'd like to defend that thesis!
In any case, I *have* read the series three times, and it wasn't just
masochism. If nothing else, the idea of daemons is unforgettable, the
gypsies are great, and Mrs. Coulter is a bombshell.
Baaaaaa!
