Bottom line: If you want to write the story, if it
would give you pleasure and creative enjoyment to
write the story... then write the story.
I write both fanfic and RL stuff, and for me, it's
something I can't imagine *not* doing. Writing is my
primary creative outlet, and it's something that gives
me great enjoyment. It's a challenge, and it's fun.
Regarding fanfic in particular, one of the advantages
is that you get quick audience response in the form of
feedback. That's always fun, not to mention, you've
got a built-in audience and don't have to worry about
finding your niche. It's more intimate and immediate
than RL writer-reader interaction, with the exception
of things like book signings, of course.
Just my 2 knuts. :)
