Thanks for the suggestions. I've picked up Pullman's work as well as Diana 
Wynne Jones...Tamora Pierce is recommended by many but her books seem too 
few pages for my speed of reading.

Does anyone have any other recommendations? I'm headed off on a half dozen 
hour flight later this week and would be interested in checking some new 
authors out.
