Rest assured your kid will train herself when she's ready. It's 
your choice if you want to take a hand or not. If either of you  are 
resentful about having to train the child, it's definitely not going to 
work, so wait until you both are feeling cooperative.  I let child 
number one train himself, which took until he was three. For 
child number two, I decided not to wait, because in those days, it 
*was* hard to find a preschool that wanted to change diapers for 
older kids. It was just the beginning of the AIDS era, and people 
were very nervous about bodily fluids. So maybe your MIL was 
remembering those days.

 I used a book, Toilet Training in Less Than a Day. It works. The 
book shows you how to  make it a game, not a battle of wills.
