How could I resist? I love this topic ....
First (of course) my RL name Storm is an ok name to have. I really
like the fact that is it 'bigger' than just me. There are several
problems. I'm forever showing ppl my driver's liecence to prove it
REALLY is my name. Another is that Storm is actually quite an old
name, though it has got associated with Rain/Thundercloud/etc ... Now
there is nothing wrong with those names either but they are more
modern.
Storm is impossible to hear on the phone. I work in a phone based job
so reception knows that calls for 'John' 'Donna' 'Dom' 'Stone''Joan'
are all likely to be for me. To make it more confusing my surname
starts with an 'S and the illiteration really gets some ppl. Of
course I have a number of *fabulous* pornstar names (donna danford),
should I chose to use them as a result.
The only thing I don't like is my initialls 'SS'. I think of Hitler
rather than the ships but that's just my association.
Names affecting personality - Laura bought this up and I think it is
definaltely true. In Au calling a child Jason or Damien is cursing
him to a life of petty crime. There isn't a really direct female
equivelant however.
In my job we deal with ppl who are in contact with community
services. As a result we have a list of names that *will* result in a
child coming in to care. One name 'Jai' is SO bad that any child
called it will automatically wind up dead with a needle in thier arm
before thier 14th birthday (parents - you have been warned!)
I agree 'fanci' spellings are a pain ... ppl who put random letters
in kid's names are just condeming them to pain and heartache.
The person who wanted to call thier daughter Antigone - I think it is
a great name, I'll come and fight your mother over it :-).
