Hi Melissa!
I'm always curious how teachers use HP in their classes. What
approach did you use? Were there any students who hadn't yet read it
already? Any parents object?

Well actually, I have taught HP #1 and #2 in my class this year. The kids had not read it before, ( I teach in a very very poor area - no one reads!)
So I was really excited to teach it and therefore they were so excited to read it! I got a class set of the books, and I also got the cd's of the story.. sSince some of the kids can read well and some of them are on a 2nd grade level, we do all the reading together in class. I play the cd and they follow along. Every Monday I give them a list of vocab (from the book) and study questions for the chapters that we are doing that week. We have a test every Friday.
I also give them fun writing assignments and activities that I make up, but that revolve around HP. They took a "sorting quiz" that I made up and they are in different houses. They get points for being on time/on task and the house that wins gets a pizza party!
We are about to do a weeks activity out of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.
Thank god the movie comes out before we get out of school b/c they are dying to see it, and they wouldnt see it otherwise.
I have had not one complaint from a parent. In fact, all I have gotten is praise from the parents and the other teachers b/c I have made the kids "want" to read. THey cannot wait to find out what happens next~
