You forgot a camp:
4) The never thought of anyone as particularly sexy camp
Or am I the only one in that camp? ...well, that's okay. Solitude
is nice; means I get the lake, bunkhouse, campfire spit and port-o-
potty all to myself. That last being a particular boon....
;-)
But really, is there anyone out there who isn't drooling over one or
more of the characters? I never really considered any of the
characters as attractive, until the question of casting wishes came
up. I mean, Colin Firth as Lupin in a film would to me be very
hotski, for example. But even that concept doesn't make me view the
character in the book outside of his function in regards Harry (which
isn't to be sexy, you know?).
I *have* thought of characters in books as sexy before. Richard Jury
in Martha Grimes's mysteries, for some reason I always envision him
as looking like the American baseball player Cal Ripken Jr., except
in a really smolderingly sexy way. And Jim Chee in some of Tony
Hillerman's mysteries has always been dead sexy to me, without
needing a particular actor/person in my mind to embody him. Same
with Merlin in Zelazney's later Amber books. But for some reason,
despite the fact that at least Lupin fits my usual fictional
character lust-bill, zip.
("I wonder why?" myself muses moot'ly [and alliteratively].)
By the way, are any of the female characters objects of lust to any
of you? There really aren't many non-jailbait femmes in the books,
to speak of. Hermione is shaping up to be a lovely young lady, if
her turn at the ball in GoF is anything to go on, but
still...jailbait. (For me, the Ick Factor leaps to the fore
when 'sexy' is applied to anyone under the age of at least 17. 16 at
the youngest. Yes, I've been thoroughly programmed by the social
norms dictated during my childhood.) Really, Lily Potter and Fleur,
are the only women that I can recall being described in such a way as
to be considered lovely. The other women are old, or horse-faced, or
pinched, or enormous, or frazzled, etc.
And, unlike with the men, other seductive qualities are not applied
to them. I mean, Lupin is thin, worn, prematurely gray ~ yet he's
kind, quick-witted, mysterious, [insert a variety of Male Heroic
Qualities], etc. Black is described as...well, yucky, really, what
with the matted hair, and snarling and all; but again with the
mysterious and heroically tormented. Snape...I will be completely
honest ~ I see no sexy there, but obviously there is something
implied about him that attracts despite being described as sallow,
snarling, mean, and occasionally indulging in spitting rages.
McGonagall is the only woman with faintly heroic qualities ~ solid,
wise, with a sensitivity underlying her sternness. But overall,
she's just basically schoolmarmy.
Huh. What's up with that, anyway?
Anyhoo. Turning off the babbling brook.
