Maybe the day when Peter killed all of those people in the middle of
a muggle street without regard to the innocents that were also
killed? Everyone thought Sirius had done it and when he escaped he
was desperately sought after (sort of like the hunt for Bin Laden).
Azkaban even "lent" dementors to Hogwarts to make sure the school was
safe (that's a sort of like the inter-agency cooperation that we are
told is now happening in an effort to prevent further tragedies)

It's the closest thing I can think about, although it doesn't seem to
be nearly on the same scale. I mean, September 11 is one of those
events that changes the face of the world and you can actually think
of the way things were *before* and identify the way things changed.
You will always remember where you were and what you were doing when
you found out. Peter's murderous get-away does not seem to have had
that kind of effect on the wizarding world as a whole.

Just a thought.
