I love my mobile phone.
Sad, isn't it?
But I do. His name is Eric and he goes everywhere in my pocket. He's one of
those cute Ericsson ones with a flip (which means that Muppet!John can't
call 999 inadvertently when change pushes buttons on phone).
HOWEVER...I know when to use Eric and when not to use Eric. In a train,
acceptable is "Hi, I'm on the 6.34 which gets in at 7.53. Love you. Bye."
Unacceptable is ranting on at some random person about how crap your day's
been, or how pretty your boss is, or how the new stock boy has a really nice
arse. OVERSHARE, too much information, shut up. Movie theater/concert
hall/lecture ringing is never acceptable. That's why there's a
"silent/vibrate" button...or an "off" button.
I have to say, though, that I prefer the UK system of mobiles -- in the UK,
it's more expensive to call mobiles, but you don't pay for incoming calls.
In the US, it's the same as a local phone call (including long distance if
it is long distance), but you pay for incoming calls too. I have a Pay As
You Go phone *because* it's cheap (for me) for my relatives to call me. Of
course, if I'm at home, I'll say "Oh, call me on the landline, because it's
cheaper".
Bah. Can you tell I'm a technology freak?
