Neither did Pullman; The Amber Spyglass was published in October 2000. 
 I suppose the cutoff date fell sometime between July and October.

Ah, I don't care.  It's always nice when something I love gets a big 
award, but whenever it doesn't, I just remind myself that "Terms of 
Endearment" won the Best Picture Oscar and then I know just how much 
these things mean.
