Sandwich spreads

Dare I risk resurrecting the "disgusting sandwich combinations we 
love" topic by asking about corned beef?  Over on the main list a 
couple of people have suggested that the solution to a dry corned beef 
sandwich is to *butter* the bread.  Here in the U.S. the usual 
solution would be mayonnaise (unless you're Jewish, in which case 
mustard is the only way to go <g>).  Is mayo not a British thing?
