The calendar is arbitrary.  The Equinox is not.  Choosing to 
"officially" start the seasons on the equinoxes and solstices is a 
little arbitrary, but all the less arbitrary things I can think of 
would have Spring starting in some places well before others, which 
would be fine with me but hard on the colthing marketers.
