I don't get this.  It's a bit of a blur after 15 years but IIRC, Ruth 
got to choose her bridesmaids' dresses on the grounds that her dad 
was paying.  A bit tough on her dad perhaps, but not too bad for them.

Even then, she tried to ensure they were dresses that they could wear 
on other occasions.
