Caveat--I am *not* yelling at Shelley....she just happens to be the one who
has most lately said

(realizing it's hopeless, unable to stop trying) they are not *crests.*
Crests in proper heraldic terminology are the little figures on top of the
helmet, if a helmet is sitting on top of the shield. What each of the houses
has is a *coat of arms.* Hogwarts has a *coat of arms* made of combining the
houses' *coats of arms.* Not crests. Nowhere in the books is the heraldry
described closely enough to tell us what the crests might be.

Anyone standing next to a kiosk in a mall who offers to research your family
crest is a goobhead and knows nothing. Argh.
