I have to tell you this story you inspired.
Well I took your advice and popped into my local thrift store. An
interesting place to say that least, but I did find a lovely light
gray pleated skirt. The fabric is a wool crepe so it is a not exactly
the perfect look but has the exactly size pleats as the Hogwart's
skirts. So, I keep flipping through the rack with the gray skirt
balanced on my arm. A few skirts later, I found the perfect Hogwart's
girl skirt complete with correct sized pleats, right length, and the
stitching of the pleats half down. The only problem was that the
skirt was a dark blue and green plaid. So I thought, "Hmmm, no
problem there. I'll just take a leaf out of Petunia's book and dye
the thing light gray." I skipped up to the counter and bought both,
need to have a back-up if this dye job is a really bad idea and
besides they were both $3.
So I stop on the way home to get the dye remover to get out the blue
and green, the gray dye to color it, and a big pot to accomplish this
feat. Giddy as everything at my luck today, I think I did not expect
the process to take so long. Granted, the removal of the previous dye
and then dyeing part was not hard, but you have to stir the thing for
30 minutes *constantly* for both sessions. Did you know if you stir 3
gallons of water with a wooden spoon for a full hour *constantly*, you
arm will being to seize up and take your shoulder with it? It became
a product of sheer will power to stir that pot. I tried to envision
that perfect *gray* Hogwart's skirt to keep me going. When time was
up, I managed to get the pot to the sink without getting the dye all
over my stove, floor, and counter. Quite proud of that. Whether or
not the skirt is light gray or not is still left to be said, but my
wooden spoon is a lovely shade of gray. :)
So now, my freshly dyed skirt is wrapped up in a towel on my counter.
I am not sure if it worked, but I will keep you posted.

Who wonder why Petunia thought it would be easier to dye Harry's
uniform rather than just get new ones.
