In my last post about using the washing machine method for dyeing, I should
also point out that while this method saves wear and tear on your arms, it
would not be any more successful than what Melody got. The only way it could
be more successful is by allowing you to leave it in the dye-removing bath
longer because it doesn't kill your arm. You could try a strong solution of
regular chlorine bleach to remove the original color, although it might damage
the fibers (not such a huge risk if you are doing it on a $3 thrift-store skirt
and you have a backup). Also, dyes tend to work best on cotton or cotton
blends.
In reading these posts, I'm starting to think it's a good thing I'm moving and
don't have time to mess with this at all, because I would be driving myself
crazy just like the rest of you. Of course, it's killing me not to do
anything, so this weekend I tried the dark T-shirt inkjet iron ons. I made a
red T-shirt with a Gryffindor emblem for my son, and a royal blue T-shirt with
a Ravenclaw emblem for my daughter (BIG pain in the neck; the Ravenclaw emblem
I found has the bird's wing feathers extending beyond the crest, so I had to
cut around each feather, and then they didn't want to adhere to the fabric so I
had to iron it 4 times). I told my daughter that I made her a Ravenclaw
because that's where all the smart kids go (the real reason was because of the
available selection of T-shirt colors, plus the fact that Gryffindor is getting
a bit cliche :-P ).
