Thank you so much for posting that! I have managed to stumble across most of them, but it took a long time being in fandom before finding some of these.

Since you work for The Leaky Cauldron I have a question, I can't access the site anymore. It's down taken down is it? I was able to see the new site design for about a day (though it did load very slow) but now I can't access it all. Can you help with this? I went to TLC every day for news and now I'm going through Potter news withdrawl!

Subject: [HPFGU-OTChatter] An Overview of Fandom
Date: Tue, 22 Oct 2002 11:27:41 -0400

Hi. The post yesterday about the PotterStinks Livejournal portion of our
Nocturne Alley community got me thinking that there are probably a lot
of areas of fandom which many people aren't aware of - covering all
different facets of fun and information.

Now, I admit that I'm not going to cover everything in here - a quick
search on Yahoo will let you know that there are at least 2000 Harry
Potter fansites out there, but I will mention the larger ones, and note
that from them, you can find other sites easily as well.

First, there's news and images. I'm an editor over at
the-leaky-cauldron.org, one of the more popular Harry Potter "news"
sites. We host tonnes of images from the movies (and will from the book
when OOTP is on the agenda) and put up reports 2-10 times a day about
news articles, magazine pieces and reports on what's new in the HP
universe. Right now, we're focused on movie things and JKR stuff,
because that's what's getting more coverage in the press - and speaking
of the press, we actually *are* press ourselves these days. Melissa, our
managing editor, is spending time this month interviewing the kids and
Chris Columbus abou Chamber of Secrets, and we'll be posting those
interviews in the days before the film is released. We're the only
online site invited on the NYC press junket, and we're thrilled to be a
part of it.

Second, there are blogs and Live Journals. Many people in fandom,
including mods of this list (JohnWalton) and other listies, have
LiveJournals (http://www.livejournal.com) and Blogs, both of which are
types of online diaries that people can use to upload bits about their
daily lives and personalities, or discussions about fandom topics. The
fandomdirectory livejournal (made by some anonymous fandomer) is the
best way to see ALL the LJs of Harry Potter fandomers - you can find it
here: http://www.livejournal.com/users/fandomdirectory/friends

Third, there are informational sites. We're sure that many of you have
seen links to the Lexicon (http://www.i2k.com/~svderark/lexicon) and may
be aware of the Goat Pen as well, which archives or links to a
tremendous number of JKR's interviews
(http://www.geocities.com/aberforths_goat/index.htm). They're useful,
they're handy and they're easy to search.

Fourth are RPGs - role playing games. There's a number of active ones,
including Hogwarts Online (http://www.hol.org.uk/index.shtml) where
people pretend to be teachers and students, and more literary ones, like
Reparo (http://www.livejournal.com/~reparo) and the aforementioned
Nocturne Alley (http://www.livejournal.com/~nocturne_alley). The longest
continuing running one in the fandom (AFAIK) is The Double Cross, which
is rated NC-17, so I won't link to it here. It's been going on for two
years in January.

And fifth, of course, is fanfic. The largest cache of HP fanfics is at
my site, FictionAlley (http://www.fictionalley.org (although as we just
moved servers, you might find it easier to locate by going to
http://64.62.140.113/)), which houses a tremendous range of fics that
take place in the HP universe, ranging from Founders' times to future
fics, and covering every possible character (yes, Mundungus Fletcher and
Newt Scamander too!) - and probably every possible permutation of
romance. There are other sites which focus on specific ships,
characters, or perspectives, like the Harry/Hermione focused Pumpkin Pie
(http://www.pumpkinpie.8m.net/), Guns & Handcuffs' Harry/Draco
(http://www.gunsnhandcuffs.8m.net/), SugarQuill
(http://www.sugarquill.net (mostly Ron/Hermione and Harry/Ginny), and
Azkaban's Lair (Remus/Sirius fics at
http://www.slashcity.org/~nezad/AzkabanLair.htm). The HPfGU Fanfic FAQ
is also available at http://www.hpfgu.org.uk/faq/fanfic.html - I admit
that it's a bit out of date, but the recommendations are all still
valid!.

Additionally, of course, there are sites like Caius Marcus' HP Filks
Page (http://home.att.net/~coriolan/) which has the lyrics, and links to
the original songs where legal, for hundreds of Harry Potter filks of
all different genres. Yes, including opera and rap.

And let's not forget that next summer in Orlando there's going to be the
first international Harry Potter syposium, hosted at the Swan & Dolphin
Hotels at Walt Disney World - check out http://www.hp2003.org for more
info.

How's that for a quick overview of fandom? I'm sure others will have
areas of fandom that I haven't mentioned yet (although the elements that
engage in trading bootlegs of the movie, the books or the soundtracks
can't post about them here) with more information for those who are
looking to explore other facets of the PotterPhenomenon.
