Now me:

There are a lot of strange interactions going on within the Trio
in this book. During the World Cup, when both boys (who are sitting
next to each other) are entranced by the veela, it's only Harry that
Hermione pulls back into his seat. It appears that both boys were
in danger of going over the guard rail. Later, when Ron becomes
angry at Harry because he thinks Harry somehow put his name in the
Goblet of Fire, Hermione spends her time with Harry, but chastises
both boys for their stubborness. Hermione is constantly talking
about Harry to Krum -- so much so that he questions Harry about a
possible relationship, etc.
It has been a long time since I was fourteen, but I did have
friends who were boys. I felt very comfortable around them and I'd
help them if I could like any of my female friends. What I did NOT
do was talk about any of my male friends to a boy I was interested
in. The person I wanted to talk about (to any friend who would
listen) was the boy I was interested in. What seems strange to me
is that Hermione seems to be relating to Harry on two different
levels, one as a friend, and the other as something more than a
friend. At the World Cup, Ron was as in as much danger as Harry. At
the end of the second task, Krum had just rescued her, but she was
all about Harry. There are several other examples that I could
cite. As for Ron, she also seems split between being attracted to
him and wanting to "mother" him in the way Mrs. Weasley does.
Now, for my question, if you could put yourself in Hermione's
place for a bit with all you know about the dynamics of the Trio,
and being as close as you are to that age group,(although I know
that seventeen is really light years from fourteen) do her
interactions with Harry seem to be the way a fourteen-year-old girl
would treat a very good male friend, or do you feel there is a bit
of subtle foreshadowing on JKR's part?

--Nia, who doesn't mind if you write a long response as you will
officially join the Fellowship of the Long-Winded.
