Alicia delurks:

I loved these books! Antonia Forest created such a strong family
history for the Marlows – as well as the 4 school stories and 6
holiday stories, she also wrote two historical (Elizabethan era)
books, "The Player's Boy" and "The Players and the Rebels", about an
actor who was an ancestor of the Marlows. He's mentioned in at least
one of novels about the more recent Marlow family.

Forest was also very conscious of the tradition in which she was
writing - at one point (in "The Attic Term, I think) the characters
find a box of old boarding school novels, set in the Chalet School,
Mallory Towers and the like, and she makes a point of noting how old-
fashioned the girls find them.

Alicia, who holds these books wholly responsible for her desire to
own a falcon.
