While I agree with you mostly I have one word to refute your "LOTR is 
mostly for guys" argument '*Legolas*'.  I could speak reams about how 
he is a rare find in literature (being an unattached guy who can't 
die {::Sniff:: Sirius} and a prince to boot.) and a small google 
search will turn up THOUSANDS of equally obsessed fangirls (yes the 
movie and hottie orlando bloom had a lot to do with this but I liked 
Legolas BEFORE the movie).  So Tolkien has stuff for girls to obsess 
over too.
