Bill Buckner was doomed by the Curse of the Bambino, which was 
visited on the Red Sox after they sold Babe Ruth to the New York 
Yankees in 1919 for $125,000 so their owner, Yawkey, could produce a 
Broadway play (it flopped).  The Bosox haven't won a World Series 
since 1918, and they never will again.
