Chocolate contains theobromine. If too much theobromine builds up in a mammal's
system, it can lead to cardiac arrest. Humans metabolise theobromine pretty quickly -
dogs do so only slowly - but they can metabolise it.
For a dog to die of chocolate poisoning it needs to have a reasonably large amount in a
reasonably short time. If a dog only has a small amount of chocolate, it's not likely to do
any harm. You should certainly avoid giving a dog chocolate - there's no sense in
playing around with amounts - but plenty of dogs have had chocolate over the years with
no ill effects.
