short-wave radio advice needed

Hello, source of much wisdom!
My recent purchase of an emergency radio has flushed me out of my cherished
lurker status to ask you folks a question. When I ordered this nifty little
device I had no idea it was going to include "world radio" bands --- I was
reacting to news of blizzards and ice storms and wanted something that would
keep me connected to the world in case Wisconsin ever got snow. (We haven't.
Have to go south for that this year.) Anyway, the radio comes, my twelve
year old son takes one look and absconds with it hoping to pull in BBC
Radio, etc. Problem is, we don't know where on the two short-wave dials to
look. Any radio buffs out there who could point a couple of rank amateurs in
the right direction? Much obliged!
