I still contend, despite the possibilities outlined above, that when 
an American goes into the store looking for "foundation garmets" 
(the official name for the Underwear Dept.) most of us walk up to a 
salesperson and say, "where's the *underwear*?" as opposed to "where 
can I buy thongs/panties/jockey shorts?". ;).

OK, a woman may ask for the "lingerie" department instead.
