Iggy - your first stop should be the Lexicon.  There are very well 
researched timelines not just for the action of the books but for 
virtually the whole of wizarding history.  The best thing is it will 
flag up any known problems and controversies.  As far as I can 
recall, year 7 should be in 1998.  

I write fic so I find once I get to a certain point in planning the 
story, I need my own timeline to work with.  So far, the Lexicon has 
supplied all the guidance I have needed (and no one has picked up on 
any timings I have written...).
