In the tradition of Medieval mystery novels, let me just add the Owen
Archer series by Candace Robb (set in York during the Hundred years
war, about a Welshman, former captain of archers in the service of the
Duke of Lancaster).
Then, if you haven't already seen it, Rowan Atkinson's Blackadder
series should be available on VHS. I've heard of history teachers
actually using that one in class.
There are some authors who write digestible Scandinavian history, too,
(my little corner of the world) but they're not available in English,
AFAIK.
