Here are some I've enjoyed:
A Distant Mirror - 14th century France during the black plague.
by Barbara Tuchman
A Peace to End All Peace: The Fall of the Ottoman Empire and
the Creation of the Modern Middle East
by David Fromkin
History of the English-speaking People (out of print, highly
opinionated, not PC and very lively indeed) by Winston Churchill
The Battle for God by Karen Armstrong -- traces the development
of fundamentalist strains in Judaism, Islam and Christianity
since the 15th century
Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies -- by
Jared Diamond -- as much biology and anthropology as history
-why did some societies develop dominance over others?
