Laura wrote (snip): I didn't like it. I didn't find anything knew in it which I hadn't already read or seen in 5 other novels or films.

I also thought the quality of writing was poor. Whilst reading it I really felt that this was written by a teenage boy who hadn't read very widely. I really thought it was like reading a bad quality fanfiction or student homework assignment. Of course, the very fact that Paolini managed to write an entire novel whislt still a teen is
still to be congratulated, it's just that I didn't think the content anything special.

I thought the narrative itself spent too much time travelling and between action, rather than in conflict. I thought then tension meant to be established between the super evil guy (sorry, don't remeber his name) and Eragon was weak (it was one of those cases where we were just told that super-evil-guy is super evil, rather than seeing it in action, or understanbding why he was super-evil).

I thought the romance was weaker still, but very typical of what a teenage boy would consider good romance to be. That is, I thought any developing romance wasn't based on people connecting with each other emotionally, but just on teen hormones and the fact that Eragon hasn't seen many other girls in his life.

I also thought the book was too episodic. That is, a lot of the themese Paolini introduced didn't come to crisis and resolution- he seems to be 'saving them' for later books. Also, Eragon didn't reach any real triumph at the end of the book, and it climaxed too quickly. One sentence the people were at war, a few sentences later it had all eclipsed.
I couldn't agree more with Laura. I think Paolini's original title for 'Eregon' was 'Ennui'. If the book 'Eregon' was a picture, that picture would tell a thousand boring words.
