Well, FictionAlley.org has a pretty intense and active board up at
http://www.fictionalley.org/fictionalleypark/forums/ - we're into
our fourth year, and we have over a million posts discussing the
books, the movies, writing (fanfiction and original fiction), the
merchandise, JKR's website and HP news in general, among other
things.
Personally, I used to prefer the mailing list format - for the first
two years that I was an admin on FictionAlley I did most of my HP
discussion on HPfGU - but the overwhelming amount of messages there
manages to crash my sidekick, so I've had to go nomail on HPfGU and
focus my discussion-postings on FictionAlley and a few LiveJournal
communities, although I still peek in on the main list every so
often, and have been individual-messages on OTC since it was founded
(except for a few weeks just after I had my second child last
summer).
Best,
Heidi
